June Ambrose is a pioneering stylist and creative director whose work has shaped the visual culture of modern music and fashion. Emerging from the Bronx in the 1990s, she rose to prominence through collaborations with hip-hop/R&B heavyweights such as Jay-Z and Missy Elliott, developing an aesthetic that combined luxury tailoring with street-level authenticity.

Throughout a career spanning over 25 years, Ambrose has maintained a disciplined, story-driven approach to image-making. Working across styling, costume design, and brand leadership, she has consistently applied cultural insight and strategic clarity to her craft. Her influence has also extended into global roles, including Creative Director for PUMA's women’s basketball division, as well as lifestyle collaborations with major brands such as Target, Macy’s, and La Mer.

Born in Antigua and raised in the Bronx, Ambrose began her journey in the fashion world at Talent Unlimited High School, where she studied theatre and costume design. It was there that she learned how clothing could speak in place of words, conveying character, emotion, and narrative through form, texture, and presence.

After a two-year tenure in investment banking, which she credits with building financial discipline, Ambrose transitioned into the music industry through an internship at Uptown/MCA Records. This marked the beginning of her professional styling career and led to early collaborations with artists such as Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, and Busta Rhymes. These partnerships positioned her as a defining stylist of the 1990s, a period when visual identity became central to music culture.

Ambrose’s creative craft is defined by authorship and intention. With a foundation in costume design, she approaches fashion through character development and narrative structure before considering silhouette or styling. Each decision is deliberate, shaped by close attention to movement, environment, and presence, a process she describes as requiring consistent authenticity and intentionality. “Every icon has a story, a vision of who they want to be,” she says. “My craft is to bring that persona to life, take what's on the inside and help them express it on the outside.”

That discipline becomes most visible in large-scale performance environments, where clothing must function across motion, rhythm, and spectacle. In designing global concert tours, Ambrose translates narrative thinking into coordinated looks engineered for function, movement, and impact. During the 2024 Missy Elliott "Out of This World" tour that spanned major venues, including �鶹�� Arena, she created nearly 250 custom outfits built to perform in real time. Whether on stage or within global brands, her approach remains consistent: fashion as storytelling, executed with precision and intent.

One of the ways Ambrose reshaped the fashion industry was by redefining how fashion was presented and who it represented. At a time when high fashion and street culture were treated as separate spheres, she bridged the gap between them. By styling hip-hop and R&B artists in tailored silhouettes, including luxury brands such as Tom Ford, Ambrose challenged traditional ideas of taste, hierarchy, and legitimacy within fashion. “When you have two creatives collaborating with one another, you lean on each other's superpowers,” she says. “Mutual respect is why we're able to create magic.”

She played a pivotal role in shifting the relationship between brands and artists from simple endorsement to creative authorship. This was most notably seen through the Missy Elliott × adidas "Respect M.E." collection, which launched in 2004. Ambrose served as the Creative Director for the line, which was the first of its kind for a female hip-hop artist. By positioning the artist as a creative partner with a distinct vision, the collection became a foundational blueprint for the modern artist-driven partnerships seen today. Her approach proved that cultural identity and storytelling could be the core of global product design and visual language.

Ambrose has extended her influence beyond fashion by engaging with broader conversations around representation, access, and creative opportunity. Through her work in fashion and media, she has consistently contributed to greater visibility for Black creatives and women, shaping how identity and authorship are discussed across cultural industries.

Alongside her creative output, she plays an active role in structured mentorship and advocacy. She has supported the next generation of talent through high-impact initiatives, such as her partnership with PUMA to mentor up-and-coming designers and her philanthropic work with organizations like The Fresh Air Fund. Rather than positioning influence as a statement, Ambrose has focused on "opening doors" and creating space for others, contributing to a cultural environment where creative leadership is measured by responsibility and the empowerment of future generations.
